Singh is KINNG

Akshay Kumar is ready to play Punjab da puttar on the silver screen yet again.

Akshay has become a regular in producer-director Vipul Shah’s films. In fact, in Shah’s last film Namastey London , Akshay played a Punjabi guy in love with a British brat.

Now, Shah is planning another film with Akki. The film, titled Singh Is King , will have Akshay playing a Punjabi again. However, Shah will not direct this movie. Rather, Anees Bazmee (of No Entry ) has been roped in to don the director’s cap.

There were reports recently that Anees has been signed by a number of producers in Bollywood to direct as many as ten films.

Anees admits that he has been signed by producers but he also confirms that his next project will be Vipul Amrutlal Shah ’s ‘Singh Is King’.

Incidentally, Anees is giving final touches to his movie Welcome , which stars Akshay and Katrina Kaif .

Well, now that Akki-Katrina jodi is rocking, can we expect them to pair yet again in ‘Singh Is King’?

Vipul Shah says only Akshay has been finalized for the movie’s cast. The remaining star cast will be announced shortly.

‘Singh Is King’ is expected to go on the floors in September this year.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X1

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 is an interesting proposition for a number of reasons. The first the will hit you on holding the X1 is the novel arc slider QWERTY keyboard. The X1 curves when you slide out the keyboard; and bizarrely it all makes ergonomic sense. The keyboard itself is firm and responsive and certainly fairs well against models that are currently available, such as the F700. Aside from the sliding keyboard the X1 is dominated by a 3 inch touchscreen display. The screen itself has a resolution of 480 x 800 which is ideal for internet browsing and thanks to HSDPA compatibility websites are loaded quickly, avoiding the frustrations that often plague lower spec handsets.

The X1 is also the first Sony Ericsson device to be compatible with Windows Mobile, but it has some differences that give the X1 some cosmetic appeal that goes beyond the frankly dull windows operating system. The X1 has a customisable panel interface that is optimised for the touchscreen. This puts the X1 firmly against the iPhone (something I’m sure the recently retired Mr Gates will relish) as this feature definitely gives the X1 a boost in the user experience stakes.

The X1 has a bountiful array of media support features to attract the tech savvy user. A three megapixel camera has been included, which is not spectacular in the dawning era of readily available five megapixel handsets, but it does the job. GPS, WiFi and Bluetooth 2.0 round this out and you can expect the ubiquitous MP3 player. Contrary to some reports the X1 does include an FM radio but it does not have RDS support like previous Sony Ericsson models. Storage is handled internally by 400 MB of memory and there is also a microSD card slot if this is not enough for you. Add in the 500 Mhz ARM processor and you can see that the X1 is a serious piece of kit.

So, the X1 is going to be a phone for business and pleasure. If you are interested just leave your name and e-mail in the box above.

Kuruvi

Vijay's ‘Kuruvi’, which is already making the right noise in Kollywood, is again in the news. For the movie is all set to hit screens on 3 May.

Director Dharani, Vijay, Trisha and music composer Vidyasagar, who came together to create a magic with ‘Ghilli’ are back again for ‘Kuruvi’, the production venture of Chief Minister M Karunanidhi's grandson Udayanidhi Stalin.

The audio release of the film was held recently in Chennai.

Speaking about the movie, Dharani said,” ‘Kuruvi’ was an all-out action- adventure laced with romance and family sentiment”.

“I have written the script keeping Vijay's image in mind”. Meanwhile, news is that ‘Kuruvi’ has become the hottest film in the trade. The Kerala theatrical rights were sold for Rs 1.50 crore. The latest is that Karnataka rights have gone in for a record Rs 1.20 crore”.

To be released in over 250 screens, the movie is one of the much-expected films in Kollywood circles.

Kuruvi is produced by Minister MK Stalin's son Udhayanidhi under the Red Giant's Movie banner with the reunion combo of Dharani-Vijay-Trisha-Vidyasagar after the smart and action packed super hit Ghilli. Kuruvi promises to be a treat for all vijay fans.

Sweeney Todd

The year’s best splatter movie is also the most exhilarating musical in recent memory. And make no mistake—Tim Burton’s take on the stage classic is a full-blown horror movie, albeit filled with more coast-to-coast singing, and gorgeous music, than most other musicals. The graphic violence will turn away—and turn off—some viewers, but it is not only integral to the story being told, but also fully delivers on the Grand Guignol elements that were always central to Stephen Sondheim’s vision. At several points, there are close-range long takes on jets of blood straight out of an old school samurai-movie and cinematographer Dariusz Wolski even allows the red stuff to land on the lens more than once. In short, Sweeney Todd’s set ends up looking like the kind of theme park that Dexter Morgan might design. In a title sequence that honestly foreshadows what’s to come, streams of deep crimson run, drip, slide, and pool; they do everything but coagulate. And for once this stylistic use of blood does not simply signal a slightly fetishistic bent in terms of the art direction: the movie is actually intended to be a bloody drama, and makes no apologies about this fact from square one.

However, horror fans would do well to note that it is well into the movie before even the first such death occurs. That hardly means, though, that a waiting-game takes place until then. Rather, the gradual build-up of an overall atmosphere of menace and corruption (social, personal, and spiritual) is done in ways that are seldom less than compelling. And even during the “slow” periods, when no on-screen deaths occur, there is enough voyeurism, cannibalism, quasi-incest, and madness to make Sweeney Todd an extremely dark feature by any standard.

Yet like any truly accomplished director of horror, Burton knows enough to leaven the material with humor as needed to provide the proverbial relief valve for the audience. And to my delight, the humor here was not of the self-indulgently quirky variety present in other Burton films but rather was true to the boldly iconoclastic black comedy of the source material.

At the risk of sounding glib, I should say that it often seemed that half the filmmakers’ job was done as soon as the casting was complete. In the title role, Johnny Depp delivers a hugely satisfying performance. But what’s truly remarkable is that, apart from this movie, you rarely get the dual pleasure of watching someone act on film—and act this well—through the nuanced articulation of each line that’s being sung. In other words, Depp is not taking a break from "acting" when he launches into song, but is actually extending the intensity of his performance. By this point in their collaboration, Burton has learned to make use not only of Depp’s presence and skill as an actor but also the aura he gives off as a star—there’s no tradeoff between these, as in previous outings.

Opposite Depp is Helena Bonham Cater, who handles the comedic and dramatic demands of her role with equal talent. Her Mrs. Lovett is not a dotty old dingbat but more a lost soul of a Goth girl who hooks up with her damaged dream man—she's a not-too-distant relative of Fight Club’s Marla Singer. And while Bonham Carter’s singing is certainly respectable, the limitations of her range are evident as well. For example, when she sings, “These are probably the worst pies in London…!”, the words should soar—it’s part of the majestic irony of the boast—but her voice never gets quite airborne. To be sure, she is wonderful at conveying the wit of Sondheim’s lyrics, but not the powerful swells of his music.

In closing, it’s an exaggeration to say that, there’s no question movie adaptation could never have imagined a more thrilling big screen version than this.

Dasavatharam (Tamil) / Dashavtar (Hindi)

‘Dasavatharam', the most expected movie of the year 2007, features Kamal Haasan and Asin in the lead roles. Planned for release sometime in the middle of the year, ‘Dasavatharam' is a class in itself. For it features Kamal in ten different roles. K S Ravikumar is directing this mega budget movie for Oscar Ravichandran. Himesh Reshammiya from Bollywood is scoring the music. This is his debut in Kollywood.

Kamal, always known in the industry for trying out something new, is handling ten different roles in this movie. It looks like he is trying to break the record of Sivaji Ganesan's nine roles in ‘Navaratri'.

The movie is being shot in different locations in India , Malaysia and the US . When the hero does something, should not the heroine follow? Kamal's ten roles are countered by Asin's dual role in the movie. This is the first time in her career Asin is playing dual role. Mallika Sherawat dons an altogether different cap in this movie. She appears as a CIA agent while Jayapradha, the well-known character artiste, plays another important role in the movie.

Kamal appears in ten different avatars like God Vishnu. His ten roles are as follows: The director of the movie says that except three roles Kamal will be totally “unidentifiable" in all the others. Kamal will be playing the role of both the hero and the villain in the movie. An Australian is handling the camera and is said that his work has come out very well. The storyline of the movie has been kept a secret till now. Michael Westmore from Hollywood is taking care of the make ups for Kamal. The first scene of the movie was alone shot at a cost of 3 crores and Kamal appeared as a Brahmin in it. The movie is planned to be dubbed in Telugu, Hindi and French.
